Raymond Scott
Documentary Film:
Stan is ON TO SOMETHING

During the past several years, Raymond Scott's only son, Stan Warnow, has been making a documentary film about his pioneering & eccentric father. Stan, who has been a professional in movies & TV since the 1960s (including the Academy Award® winning WOODSTOCK film, HAIR, RAGTIME, ISLE OF WIGHT FESTIVAL, plus SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE, & THE WONDER YEARS on television), plans to unveil his doc to coincide with the 100th anniversary of his dad's birth.
The film combines archival footage & historic photographs with interviews of Raymond Scott's family & professional colleagues, as well as followers such as Mark Mothersbaugh, Don Byron, Hal Willner, & DJ Spooky. The documentary's soundtrack has been constructed entirely from Scott's own compositions.

Thank You For Smoking
A clever short film created by Steve Cloutier titled THE CHIMNEY, set to the music of Raymond Scott's 1936 classic, "Powerhouse" is now viewable on YouTube. Check it out, then pass the ashtray...

Hi Jeff,
I see that you have a link to my YouTube movie on your news page. Thanks.
FYI -- I've just re-posted the movie because I was never satisfied with the quality of the original post. I was able to improve it a bit and it can be viewed here: THE CHIMNEY
For a little background, I didn't set out to make any kind of statement about smoking or anything. I simply liked "Powerhouse" so much that I wanted to do something with it. The storyboard was totally influenced by the music.
If I didn't tell you before, you've put together a really nice website for the man. He'd be pleased.
Thanks again,
-Steve
Uh-Oh!
Hero Motion Pictures animation studios in San Francisco recently created the short film "uh-oh: a brief encounter." Directed by Joe Henke, it's the short story of a brief meeting on a not-too-far-away planet. Told without dialogue and set to the music of Raymond Scott's 1936 classic hit, "The Toy Trumpet."
STARSKY And HUTCH
And... SCOTT?!

Yes, it's true -- Raymond Scott's 1937 classic "Dinner Music For A Pack Of Hungry Cannibals" was licensed for the new STARSKY AND HUTCH movie. Why is a 1930s pop tune in a '70s-era flick? Well, we don't know yet. But if you're curious enough, the film (starring Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, and Snoop Dogg) is now on DVD. Order from Amazon here... And check-out Scott's "Hungry Cannibals" tune on the MICROPHONE MUSIC 2-CD set.
Rough Trade and Mute Records have released a 2-CD collection titled "ELECTRONIC 01," which features a Raymond Scott track. Other artists of past & present on the compilation include Kraftwerk, Aphex Twin, John Cage, Throbbing Gristle, Faust, New Order, Can, Coil, Stereolab, Pierre Henry, Human League, Brian Eno, and Depeche Mode. >> Order CD set from Amazon.com

What A Character!
From David Garland, host of SPINNING ON AIR, on WNYC Radio:
Hi Jeff: I'm about a third of the way into Michael Chabon's novel, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (Random House) and to my surprise Raymond Scott shows up as a character in the story. The novel is set in New York, and at this point in the story it's 1940. They've just gone to a party for Salvador Dali:
- - "Most of the names were unfamiliar to Joe, but he did recognize Raymond Scott, a composer who had recently hit it big with a series of whimsical, cacophonous, breakneck pseudo-jazz pop tunes. Just the other day, when Joe stopped at Hippodrome Radio, they had been playing his new record, 'Yesterthoughts,' over the store PA. Scott was feeding a steady diet of Louis Armstrong platters to the portable RCA while explaining what he had meant when he referred to Satchmo as, 'the Einstein of the blues.' As the notes fluttered out of the fabric-covered loudspeaker, he would point at them, as if to illustrate what he was saying, and even tried to snatch at one with his hands. He kept turning the volume up, the better to compete with the less important conversations taking place around him."
A few pages later, Salvador Dali, who was wearing an old-fashioned diving suit, begins to suffocate, and Raymond Scott tries to remove Dali's metal helmet. In that scene, when someone suggests they remove Dali's helmet, Scott shouts, "What the f*** do you think I'm trying to do?!" That seems uncharacteristic to me, but what the f*** do I know about how much d*** cursing Raymond did?
So far, I'm enjoying the book a lot.
